Do & Stay

Our Recommendations for the weekend in Atlanta

There's plenty to do and see while you're in here for the wedding! Atlanta is full of incredible restaurants, museums, beautiful city parks, and strollable neighborhoods. Will has put together a guide of some of our favorite spots below!

Near Decatur

Downtown Decatur

Decatur, the location of our wedding, has been consistently voted the best town to live in in Georgia (as well as one of the best in the US!) and has a walkable downtown which includes Decatur Square, some of Atlanta’s best restaurants, bars, breweries, small music and art venues, and festivals.

Decatur Book Festival

One of the nation’s largest independent book festivals, this event will be unavoidable as it takes over downtown Decatur on October 2nd and 3rd. Check out their website for a schedule of events, talks, and food trucks.

Fernbank Museum

Natural history museum featuring huge dinosaur skeletons, a forest walk, and large screen theater.

Carlos Museum

Small museum located on Emory University’s quad featuring spectacular Ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Mesoamerican collections.

DeKalb County International Farmers' Market

Huge grocery store and cafeteria with locally-grown and international products; go early, it’s a zoo.

Stone Mountain Park

Expansive park surrounding the world’s largest granite outcropping, with hiking trails, a lake, and a walk up the mountain with excellent views.

Near Atlanta

Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park & Preservation District

Run by the National Park Service, this complex of sites includes Dr. King’s birthplace, Ebenezer Baptist Church, and the King Memorial Center, located in the historic Sweet Auburn neighborhood.

Zoo Atlanta & Grant Park

Atlanta’s zoo has a wide range of animals and is particularly known for its large primates; located in historic Grant Park, Atlanta’s oldest surviving city park.

The Georgia Aquarium

One of the world’s largest aquariums, known for its whale sharks. Be sure to go early.

World of Coca-Cola

An obligatory entry on any list of Atlanta attractions featuring Atlanta’s most famous export, this interactive attraction is a temple to the fizzy drink, capitalism, and tooth decay. Yay!

Center for Puppetry Arts

The nation’s largest museum devoted to puppetry, including a large Jim Henson collection.

Piedmont Park

Atlanta’s version of Central Park located in the heart of Midtown.

Neighborhoods to Check Out

Virginia Highland

One of our favorite places to walk with Ted, this lovely neighborhood has nice restaurants and coffee shops, a lively bar scene, and shops.

Inman Park

Another of our favorite places to go with Ted, this old neighborhood features spectacular Victorian homes, a busy restaurant scene (including Krog Street Market), and access to…

The Atlanta beltline

An ongoing, city-wide project converting old railroad tracks into walking trails, the Beltline section adjacent to Inman Park was one of the first to open and has seen restaurants and shops bloom alongside it. The Beltline will be crowded during nice weather but allows access between different neighborhoods and sites (including Ponce City Market).

Little Five Points

One of Atlanta’s most famous neighborhoods and historically the center of Atlanta’s counterculture, Little 5 is a great place for thrift store shopping, bar hopping, eating, and watching a game at America’s best soccer bar.

Buford Highway

A busy, sprawling highway lined with strip malls housing businesses from many of Atlanta’s diaspora communities. This is a great place for checking out Asian and Latin American markets and restaurants, and while you can find food from most countries here, this stretch has particularly strong Mexican, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Korean options.
